Welcome to Dubai — Your First Trip Just Got Easier
Dubai can feel overwhelming on your first visit — mega malls, desert safaris, dress codes, and a dozen cultural nuances. Here are the 20 things every first-timer should know.
Before You Arrive
1. Check Your Visa Requirements
Many nationalities get visa-on-arrival for 30 or 90 days. Others (including Pakistan, India, and most African countries) need a pre-arranged visa. Apply 5-7 days ahead.
2. Book Your Tours in Advance
Popular tours (Desert Safari, Burj Khalifa, La Perle) sell out days ahead. Book 1-2 weeks in advance to avoid disappointment.
3. Download Essential Apps
- Careem — Middle East's Uber
- Talabat — Food delivery
- RTA Dubai — Metro, bus, taxi
- WhatsApp — Everyone uses it here
Cultural Rules & Dress Code
4. Dress Modestly in Public
Not as strict as Saudi Arabia, but still conservative. For malls and public places:
- Shoulders and knees covered
- No see-through or tight clothing
- Swimwear only at pools and beaches
5. Respect Ramadan
During the holy month (dates shift each year):
- Don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight
- Most restaurants close during day, open for Iftar
- Working hours reduce; some attractions open later
- Dress even more modestly
6. Public Displays of Affection
Hand-holding is fine. Kissing or intimate gestures in public may attract attention. Keep it respectful.
7. Photography Rules
Don't photograph:
- Government buildings and military installations
- Local women without permission
- Airports and metro (in some areas)
- People praying
When in doubt, ask first.
Money & Payments
8. Currency
UAE Dirham (AED). USD widely accepted at hotels and major malls. Exchange rates are better at currency exchange shops than hotels.
9. Cash vs Card
Cards work everywhere — from luxury stores to street vendors. Keep AED 200-500 cash for small purchases, tips, and souks.
10. Tipping Culture
- Restaurants: 10% if service not included
- Taxi drivers: Round up to nearest AED 5-10
- Hotel housekeeping: AED 10-20/day
- Tour guides: AED 20-50 per person
Getting Around
11. Metro is Your Friend
Fast, clean, cheap (AED 3-8 per trip). Get a Nol Card. Trains run until midnight (1 AM on weekends).
12. Taxis Are Reliable
Use the RTA app or flag street taxis. Meter-based — no haggling. Careem/Uber slightly cheaper.
13. Abu Dhabi is 90 Minutes Away
Worth a day trip — Grand Mosque, Louvre, Ferrari World. Book a tour with pickup instead of self-driving.
Safety & Health
14. Dubai is Extremely Safe
One of the world's safest cities. Crime is rare. Solo female travellers are very safe. Emergency: 999 (police), 998 (ambulance).
15. Stay Hydrated
Summer (June-Aug): 40-45°C. Drink 2-3L water daily. Carry a bottle. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening.
16. Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable
SPF 50+. The sun is intense even in winter. Reapply every 2 hours.
Practical Tips
17. SIM Cards
Buy at airport arrivals — Etisalat or du. Tourist SIM: AED 55-100 for 5-10GB. Very fast 5G.
18. Alcohol Rules
Available at licensed hotels, restaurants, bars. Not sold in grocery stores. Legal drinking age: 21.
19. Language
Arabic is official. English is universal — 90% of service staff speak it. Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog also common.
20. Weekend is Friday-Saturday
Not Saturday-Sunday. Many offices close Friday. Government offices Saturday-Thursday.
